There are many marine electronics for sale on the market so how do you find the right ones for you?  Marine electronics span a wide variety of products and are designed for communication, entertainment, navigation and sporting.  With the addition of the right gadgets and instruments you can make your time on the water easier, more efficient and more fun.  Make sure you’re not only getting the best marine electronic product for your needs but also a great deal by checking out the market and being well informed.

Marine GPS

Once only available in the realm of the army and intelligence agencies GPS technology became available to the average consumer in the late 1990’s.  By using a network of 24 satellites GPS marine electronics can find your position, map out routes and tell you your speed.  With the simple addition of a GPS marine electronics to your boat you can be assured of never getting lost again.  When combined with fish finders, marine GPS units can map out locations with the most potential for catching your prey.  Depending on your range of marine activities and the size of your boat different GPS devices will work best for you.

Depth Sounders

Depth sounders are sophisticated pieces of marine electronic equipment that are a must have for any serious boater.  Unlike fish finders that scan the area below the bottom of the boat looking for fish, depth sounders sole purpose is to figure out how deep the water is.  By properly using these devices, also referred to as depth finders, you can keep from running aground when in shallow water or in areas known to have sand bars.  Depth sounders also help with setting your anchor with proper scope.  Using high tech transducers these vital pieces of marine electronics pass tons of information on to you in an easy to view form.

Fish Finders

If you’re serious about fishing then fish finders are a must have piece of electronic marine equipment.  These pieces of marine electronics use sound waves to map out whatever is below the boat including fish, obstructions and where the bottom is.  Many finders have built in depth sounders, saving you from buying one separately.  Many, like the Garmin fishfinders, are linked to GPS so you can mark where you found fish and navigate back.  These all in one devices may or not be for you depending on your needs.  Find out more about fish finders and which ones are right for you by checking out our reviews and information.

VHF Radios

VHF radios, or Very High Frequency radios, are the best way to keep in contact while out on the water.  While we have become dependent on cell phones, coverage can be severely limited out on the water and when safety is concerned you shouldn’t risk it.   Marine VHF radios have a range anywhere between 5 to 25 miles, depending on the model and power.  They can be used to communicate with the Coast Guard, a harbormaster or request a tow and without one you could literally be stranded in the middle of nowhere.  VHF radios come in two main forms; fixed mount and handheld.  Fixed mount radios feed off the electrical systems of your boat while handhelds do not.  If you have a small craft with no electrical system then hand held marine VHF radios are the way to go.  To find out which radios are right for you check out our reviews and information.

Radar

Marine radar units are vital if you are doing any boating in high traffic areas or shipping lanes.  With modern marine electronic technology you can identify, track and plot the course and speed of multiple targets.  This kind of technology is not only convenient and helpful but extremely important for your safety and of those around you.  These radar units are smaller and easier to install than commercial radar found on large ships.  Options and power of marine radar units vary by model and brand so researching what’s available on the market will lead to finding the perfect radar unit for you.

Marine Lap Tops

Like many other aspects of our lives marine navigation has entered the Information Age with marine lap tops and navigation software. By combining the fast and powerful computing power of lap tops with software marine enthusiasts can link together many onboard marine electronics like GPS, autopilot system, radar, depth finders and fish finders.  You can import data from your marine electronic devices, save it on marine lap tops and plan your next trip at home.  Not every marine enthusiast will have the need for such powerful mapping software.  Find out here if you could benefit from this level of marine technology and what navigation software is right for you.
